Jasmine Rao is a screenwriter, director and editor with 15 years of experience.
Throughout her career, she’s worked on several noteworthy pieces including Showtime’s Emmy nominated documentary Quiet Storm: The Ron Artest Story, multi-award winning documentary Last Call: The Shutdown of NYC Bars and 100 Years 100 Women, a piece examining where we are 100 years after gaining women’s suffrage, covered by Vogue.
For years she waited for the right project to come along that would express exactly what she wanted to say. But surprise! That didn’t happen because no one else is her, duh. That’s when she decided to write her own films about the twisted comedy found in generational trauma and the vehement denial of who you are…because sometimes you just gotta laugh about it. She hopes to get her films major theatrical releases in the coming years and bring South Asian American stories firmly into the mainstream.
When she’s not writing or directing, she’s hanging with her cats, constantly testing her spice limits, matchmaking, traveling the world to soak in as many perspectives as she can and occasionally sleeping.
